As part of the RE module, ‘Solidarity and the Common Good,’ Classes 9 and 10 have been working hard to organise a fundraising event to raise money for Caritas. Caritas is an organisation that works hard to help rebuild the lives of people who face many challenges and hardships.
Below is a video appeal to help raise awareness about these challenges and to advertise our fundraising event, ‘Crazy Hair Day,’ which will take place on Friday 1st July. The children used the app Spark Video to bring their research to life. Please watch the video to find out more information.
In Science, Class 9 have been studying the topic, ‘Living things and their habitats’. As part of this unit, the children were required to find out about the lifecycles of different types of animals such as mammals, amphibians, reptiles and birds. The children used the app ‘Spark Video’ to present their research on the lifecycle of a frog.
On the evening of Wednesday 23rd March and the morning of Thursday 24th March, pupils from our Year 5 classes led us a reflection of the Easter Story. They maintained a reverent, respectful manner throughout their outstanding performance. Well done on using such loud, clear voices and enabling our younger children to understand the message of Holy Week…
To celebrate the end of the half term, Class 9 and Class 10 took to the playground to set off their fantastic, homemade volcanoes. Children used vinegar and bicarbonate of soda or mints and coca cola to emulate a volcanic eruption. The children (and parents) made the volcanoes during their ‘What Makes the Earth Angry?’ topic. A huge thank you to the parents who gave their time to help produce such wonderful creations!
This half term in Computing, Class 9 have been learning how to collect weather data. We identified different aspects of weather and the tools used to measure them. We then collated weather data for Salford over a 24 hour period using Microsoft Excel. Following this, we studied weather broadcasts. Using the ‘Green Screen’ app, we were able to produce our own weather reports. Here is just one example of the fantastic broadcasts produced.
In just one dance lesson, the fantastic children of Class 9 choreographed their own dances based on the formation of volcanoes. The children picked their own music thinking carefully about how it imitated the action of the magma. Enjoy the eruption!
This half term in Science, Class 9 have been studying different states of matter. Part of this topic involved learning all about the water cycle. The water cycle involves four main processes – evaporation, condensation, precipitation and collection. Yesterday in class, the children were given a bowl, water, cling film, ice and the use of a radiator. The children were asked to identify which part of the water cycle these items represented, and then had to work out how to use these items to recreate the water cycle. The results were impressive!
Over the past few weeks in Geography, Class 9 have been learning about ‘What makes the earth angry?’ This has included the study of tectonic plates, earthquakes and volcanoes. To finish the topic, the children collectively wrote a personification poem about a volcano. The children chose a Hydra (a mythical beast) to represent the magma’s rise to the surface of the earth’s crust. The poem has been edited for the below animation which was put together using iMovie.
Sebastian Kuc, a Year 5 pupil in Miss Farrell’s class, has designed and made his very own guitar! Class 9’s Science topic of ‘Sound’ inspired Sebastian’s creation and the end product is outstanding! With the help of his dad, Sebastian hand-crafted his guitar from wood, real guitar strings and a bag strap. Let’s hope that Sebastian continues to inspire us all with his musical talents!
