The whole school had an absolute ball celebrating Chinese New Year! Calligraphy, Chinese paper folding, lantern making and traditional lion dancing were just some of the excellent activities taking place around the school. A huge thank you to all the parents who supported the day; it was clear a huge effort had been made judging by the fantastic outfits the children arrived to school in. A whole school Lion Dance performance, courtesy of the Manchester Chinese Cultural Centre, left children completely mesmorised; some of our staff and children also had the opportunity to take part in it too. To celebrate the end of the half term, Class 9 and Class 10 took to the playground to set off their fantastic, homemade volcanoes. Children used vinegar and bicarbonate of soda or mints and coca cola to emulate a volcanic eruption. The children (and parents)Ā made the volcanoes during their ‘What Makes the Earth Angry?’ topic. A huge thank you to the parents who gave their time to helpĀ produce such wonderful creations!
This half term in Computing, Class 9 have been learning how to collect weather data. We identified different aspects of weather and the tools used to measure them. We thenĀ collated weather data for Salford over a 24 hour period using Microsoft Excel. Following this, we studied weather broadcasts. Using the ‘Green Screen’ app, we were able to produce our own weather reports. Here is just one example of the fantasticĀ broadcasts produced.
In justĀ one dance lesson, the fantastic children of Class 9 choreographed their own dances based on the formation of volcanoes. The children picked their own music thinking carefully about how it imitated the action of the magma. Enjoy the eruption!
Over the past few weeks in Geography, Class 9 have been learning about ‘What makes the earth angry?’ This has included the study of tectonic plates, earthquakes and volcanoes. To finish the topic, the children collectively wrote a personification poemĀ about aĀ volcano. The children chose aĀ Hydra (a mythical beast)Ā to represent the magma’s rise to the surface of the earth’s crust. The poem has been editedĀ for the below animation which was put together using iMovie.
With London 2012 looming, Miss Magdzinskiās class have been busy decorating their classroom and learning about the events in time for this Summerās events! So far we have learned about and coloured the flags of over 70 different countries of the world, made an Olympic flag, created our own stadium (with us as the athletes!), made golden torches, learned interesting facts about London, and much much, more! To complete our Year 5/6 pupils’ work on Nepal, a small group have planned and produced the collage below. They worked from a photograph of Kumudini Homes School; one of the schools visited by Mrs Slack, Mr Cooper and Miss Ryman in February 2009. Maybe pupils from Kumundini Homes will produce some art work about St. Philip’s in the future…
As mentioned last week, pupils from Year 5/6 are currently learning about the life and culture of Nepal. A group of girls have studied Nepalese dance and have choreographed a dance which bridges the gap between East and West. Pupils from the Kumidini Homes school in Pokhara are enjoying the work from this project as we speak via this page!
